Having started with an X9 I was disappointed with the slow time to first fix (could take from 5 minutes to never!) and the lack of accuracy of the track. The X10 is a huge step forward – normally fixed within a couple of minutes and track accuracy significantly improved (though can still suffer under tree canopy).

Battery life acceptable – so far with occasional GPS use (once or twice a week)have not had to charge it other than connection to the PC to download tracks. Some have complained about visibility of time and display but I have had no serious problems.

Waterproofing makes it ideal for outdoor activity and tracking your position. Expensive but a GPS unit I can use.

Do not buy this watch if you want a GPS sports watch to help with running. On my experience anyway. It’s a well made and designed watch with many useful and intuitive functions. However, in the 2 week period that I tried it out running in London, in the countryside and skiing in the Alps, it often took a very long time to locate itself and very frequently could not pick up a location at all in the course of a 30 minute run in London and the country (wide open spaces, no trees). To that extent it was useless for gauging distance run and speed.

It performed much better in the Alps and it was useful (and easy) to connect to Google earth and chart a course covered while ski touring. very useful and interesting feature.

Battery life sounds poor (about 6 hours on GPS locating (or trying to locate) every second) but in practice the battery life wasn’t an issue since locating every 30 seconds is fine for most apps.

Main problem is the poor GPS pick up. Good on Suunto for making such a small GPS – but it looks as though the pay off in reduced efficiency of the GPS unit is just too great to make it a useful runner’s tool.

I returned this (to Facewest who have excellent service) and am now looking at a replacement Polar with footpod or at the Garmin. It may be that I had a dud watch and others out there disagree so keep reading the reviews and see if Suunto come up with any improvements.

A very useful device but it has a few flaws:
    1. The GPS can take over ten minutes to get a fix (if it even manages at all). My GlobalSat BT-338 is much quicker.
    2. Even though it is set to record points every second, it actually records every ten seconds.
    3. The finish is inclined to chip and peel, especially round the face of the watch.

Although it is more convenient than lugging a PDA and bluetooth GPS receiver around with me when I go out for a walk, it is by no means a replacement for my Palm T|X. However, it is a very handy backup when the Palm’s battery runs out or I leave the bluetooth receiver at home.

I also feel that better use could be made of the barometer. The ambiguous “weather alarm” is little more than a random alert that seems to have no bearing on anything in real life.

I have not yet been able to drain the battery, which is one area where I am impressed (so far).
